Are You Internet Marketing with Your Pants on The Ground?

So, Are You Internet Marketing with Your Pants on The Ground?

Unless you’ve been living in a cave recently or just haven’t been spending any time at all on the television, you’ve seen the latest 2 minute wonder launched on American Idol’s latest auditioning campaign with his hit: ‘Pants on The Ground‘.
note: If you’re here just looking for the video replay scroll down to the bottom of this post!
His name is Larry Platt and he’s a 62 year old man (calls himself General Larry Platt) who auditioned with a rap tune titled “Pants On the Ground”. Now in the lyrics of the tune, Larry is apparently making a statement about a social trend that is prevalent with many inner city youths, who find it cool to wear their “Pants on the Ground” (actually more like ‘nearly to their knees’). He goes on to rap about other dress code fads such as wearing “their hats turned sideways” and then let’s everyone know how he feels about it when he raps on to say they are “Looking like a Fool….” All this however, happening as he points out, these youths perceive themselves to be “Cool Cats”….

General Larry Platt points out, that although this social group thinks they are being really cool, they are actually being perceived by the other members of their communities (or at least himself) as annoying, inappropriate and way out of place.

So what does this have to do with the internet marketing?

The commonality here is the obliviousness to improper conduct or etiquette, displayed by many marketers as they join social media communities, as platforms on which to conduct their marketing pitches.

Many unsavvy marketers never take the time to learn about the cultures within social media communities. They conduct their marketing efforts within social networks, without any regard for what’s proper, and what’s totally unacceptable to the majority of the community members.

They begin marketing their opportunities or products all over different groups that have no interest in marketing or business opportunities. Rather than using social sites as a means to connect with others and network, they begin selling and pitching as soon as they ‘walk into the party’. Even when they are considerate enough to at least join groups of other marketers, they miss the boat by ‘pitching’ before ‘connecting’.

They are in fact as annoying and stupid looking, as General Larry Platt seems to think these individuals are that are wearing their pants to the ground.

If you haven’t seen the General Larry Platt in action, you can check him out on the youtube video here:

So, the moral of this story is: If you’re looking to join social networking sites with the intention of marketing, make sure you’re not doing it with your “pants on the ground!”

  1. LOL….Barry, what a great way to introduce your topic. That is definitely thinking outside the box. One of the most original I’ve seen so far.

But you are correct. If you go out in the networks with your pants on the ground, you will come out looking like a fool – and no leads or income to show for it.

    Genius! πŸ™‚

  2. Aha! Thanks! Glad you liked it Linus.

  3. Barry,
This is an outstanding way of getting your message across. I have to agree with you people need to learn how to avoid the urge to spam on social sites and really get their game together and learn how to market online.

  4. HAHA. I love it. One of the most clicked through email blasts I ever send was about American Idol. Great way to bring into light how oblivious to these people that they are being innapropriate and abusing the social media platform.

  5. Hey Barry,

Great Article. I have to confess, I was one of those newbies blasting my opportunity. I didn’t take me long to realize that method does not work in the social arena.

  6. Carlos,

Thanks for commenting. I think a lot of new marketers just haven’t discovered the training that is available on how to market effectively and properly.

  7. Jeff,
    Right on man!

  8. John,

I think we’ve all done it to some degree. The key is paying attention enough to figure it out and making corrections.
    Thanks for stopping by.

  9. “Lookin like a foo with yer pants on the ground”

That’s a good little capstone phrase of my week this week.

I have multiple obligations and have had my hands in my pockets, oh wait, pants on the ground, with a couple of engagements.

Awesome post Barry! Hilarious my friend! Thanks for sharing the laugh…

  10. Zack,

This guy on Idol makes me crack up laughing every time I think about his “rap” tune. I predict it might be the hit ‘jingle’ of 2010!

    Thanks for posting your comments!

  11. Hey Barry,
Great tie-in. I believe you will get many people to start thinking about how they are portrayed by something as simple as their advertising. Excellent job of using current events to get your message across.

Soooo…when do we see “Surfin’ Barry” on Idol?

    To Your Continued Success,

  12. That was a great idea!! You are right about some people using social networking unskillfully. As I mentioned in one of my videos about online branding it is not the product that people end up buying, it is the person or idea, or concept. The product is the is the means to an end but not where the attraction starts.
    Thanks for the reminder.

  13. Great post, Barry…good use of the song to make a crucial point about social networking.

  14. Hello Barry,

Great analogy to the amateurs in the social media world who are pitching their businesses and products as soon as they “arrive at the party”.

Hopefully these people will see your post and get the message.

  15. Barry,

I knew this was gonna be a CLASSIC post as soon as I saw the headline! πŸ˜‰ The General definitely knows what he is talking about and so do you when it comes to internet marketing. Awesome post man!

    – Yo

  16. Man Barry, I don’t want to be that guy. I think that magnetic sponsoring by Mike Dillard lays out perfectly the strategy needed to project yourself with professionalism. Great analogy by the way.
