So, Are You Internet Marketing with Your Pants on The Ground?

Unless you’ve been living in a cave recently or just haven’t been spending any time at all on the television, you’ve seen the latest 2 minute wonder launched on American Idol’s latest auditioning campaign with his hit: ‘Pants on The Ground‘.

His name is Larry Platt and he’s a 62 year old man (calls himself General Larry Platt) who auditioned with a rap tune titled “Pants On the Ground”. Now in the lyrics of the tune, Larry is apparently making a statement about a social trend that is prevalent with many inner city youths, who find it cool to wear their “Pants on the Ground” (actually more like ‘nearly to their knees’). He goes on to rap about other dress code fads such as wearing “their hats turned sideways” and then let’s everyone know how he feels about it when he raps on to say they are “Looking like a Fool….” All this however, happening as he points out, these youths perceive themselves to be “Cool Cats”….

General Larry Platt points out, that although this social group thinks they are being really cool, they are actually being perceived by the other members of their communities (or at least himself) as annoying, inappropriate and way out of place.

So what does this have to do with the internet marketing?

The commonality here is the obliviousness to improper conduct or etiquette, displayed by many marketers as they join social media communities, as platforms on which to conduct their marketing pitches.

Many unsavvy marketers never take the time to learn about the cultures within social media communities. They conduct their marketing efforts within social networks, without any regard for what’s proper, and what’s totally unacceptable to the majority of the community members.

They begin marketing their opportunities or products all over different groups that have no interest in marketing or business opportunities. Rather than using social sites as a means to connect with others and network, they begin selling and pitching as soon as they ‘walk into the party’. Even when they are considerate enough to at least join groups of other marketers, they miss the boat by ‘pitching’ before ‘connecting’.

They are in fact as annoying and stupid looking, as General Larry Platt seems to think these individuals are that are wearing their pants to the ground.

So, the moral of this story is: If you’re looking to join social networking sites with the intention of marketing, make sure you’re not doing it with your “pants on the ground!”
