So what is blogging?

You probably have heard the term but are still not quite sure what is it all about. Well a blog is basically a journal that is kept over the internet through sites like blogspot.com and wordpress.com. The word blog comes from the terms web and log.

Now a blog differs from a traditional website because it is written in more of a journal like format where the writer adds regular entries. This writer enters these entries to their blog either for just themselves, a select group of viewers or for anyone who wants to read what they have to say. These entries are commonly known as ‘post’. I know it sounds like technical jargon but it is really pretty simple. A post is nothing more than the blog author’s thoughts or information that they want to share written chronologically. The actual act of updating a blog is called blogging and a person who actively writes to a blog is called a blogger.

So now that you know all the fancy technical terms I bet you are wondering why anyone would even want to start their own blog in the first place. Well there are as many reasons for starting a blog as there are blogs out there, but for the most part they written for three reasons;

  • As a way to give out information – Because they are an all knowing oracle who must share their information to maintain their lifeforce. Might be a little known blogger law…still unsure.

To making money – Yes, the almighty dollar, moolah, cheddar, dough, Benjamins, snaps, greenbacks, bread. Isn’t bread and dough the same thing? Hmmm…sorry I digress.

Just for fun – Yes, you can have a blog just for fun or to put a smile on someones face. It is kinda of like a triple rainbow in the form of an internet page.

Let’s take a closer look at these;

Information blogs are not only written by individuals but also by companies sharing their knowledge on everything from growing apples to caring for zebras and everything in between. News blogs also fit into this category and allow us to see events from around the world as they are happening. For example in 2009 we saw the first photos of the US Airways plane that landed in New York’s Hudson River from someone on a ferry near by. So a blogger broke the news before any of the major networks.

Money, money and money! There are lots of people making a supplemental income from blogging. With a good idea, great content and even better marketing, a blog can do very well making money from the advertising that is placed on it. Using Google Adsense, internet bookmarking sites, social networking, back links and good ol’ fashion word of mouth, your site can move up the search engine rankings in no time. The only downside is that you may have to change your blog name to something like; wowlookatallthismoneyinmybankaccount.blogspot.com

Having a blog just for fun is a great way to put your thoughts out there, stay in touch with friends and family and much more. A family blog for example is a great way to pass along information and events to everyone instead of sending out emails to each and every one of them individually.

You can get started blogging with your own blog for free! Yep, you can have your own blogspot blog from blogger.com or try wordpress.com. Both are really easy to use and best of all totally free.

If you want to start a blog the best thing to do is write about your passions especially if it is your first blog. Writing about your passion or hobbies will help you stay focused on writing even when you don’t really feel like it.

That is because blogging really does take some work and you need to be consistent with your writing for the best results.

So it helps to write about something you are really in to. Also,it helps to write on a regular schedule. Every day, once a week, it doesn’t matter as long as you are consistent. Sites like blogspot.com allow you to schedule the delivery of your post. So if wanted you could type them all up on the same day but schedule them to post on your blog though out the week.

Having your own blog is great. It doesn’t require any programing knowledge or anything like that. As a matter of fact you can have your very own blog up and running in a matter of minutes. With seven billion people on the planet and 2 billion of them on the internet, there is bound to be someone that is interested in what you have to say.

So, just what is this “blog” thing that everybody has been talking about?

Much like social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace, creating and maintaining a blog is a way to communicate and connect with like-minded people online. Short for “web log”, a blog is a website or sub-section of a website that is frequently updated with new content and acts as a personal diary which the public can access. The word “blog” is also used as a verb to describe the act of updating (known as posting), writing, and generally maintaining one’s blog. There is even a word for the world of blogs; it is collectively known as the “blogosphere”.

Genres vary from creative blogs about art, music, and literature to political and social commentary blogs, and those run by corporations and organizations. The latter may exist as an in-house only entity created to improve and develop the culture of the corporation or it may be an external blog used for branding, marketing, or public relations. And while it is still somewhat controversial in the blogsophere, many bloggers are making a living blogging by offering advertising space on their blogs

The most popular type of blogs are run by individuals who produce steady entries of commentary on any number of subjects or even their own lives, and most are interactive, allowing readers or followers to comment on the content and even message the blogger. Bloggers often go on to develop social relationships with their followers and some bloggers use the medium to further promote and develop their creative and/or business brands. There are many sites online that host blogs for those who do not wish to create their own blog website or for those individuals seeking the sense of community that these blog hosting sites foster. Some examples are Blogger, Typepad, and WordPress; some are free and others charge a nominal fee. There are currently over 156 million public blogs in existence on the Internet.

Many bloggers have crossed into other media, brokering book deals or even gaining television shows. The Pioneer Woman, Ree Drummond, has made the jump from Weblog of the Year for 2009 and 2010 at the Annual Weblog Awards (The Bloggies) to Food Network TV personality. Writer Julie Powell is a blogger who not only published a book based on her experience writing a blog about cooking all of the recipes in Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking in a year, but also has the distinction of being the first person to have a movie based on her blog. The popularity of blogs even prompted Time Magazine to name as their 2006 Person of the Year, “You”, referring to bloggers.
